Heart Opening Poses for Valentine’s Day

This is the time of year when many are opening their heart to their loved ones to show the affection and appreciation they feel all year. Show your body some love by trying these heart opening poses.

Up Dog

Lie on your belly. Place your hands at your lowest rib, fingertips facing forward, palms facing down. Press your hands into your mat and lift your chest off your mat by straightening your arms. Open your heart by drawing your shoulders towards either side of the room and back.

Cat-Cow Pose

Start on your hands and knees. For cat pose, round your back and pull your chin into your chest as if you are a cat who has been startled and arches their back. Then take cow pose. Look up, bow your back towards the floor and draw your shoulder blades towards each other. This is a great way to strengthen your spine.

Bridge Pose

Start on your back, with your feet flat on the floor and knees bent. Press your feet into your mat and lift your hips up toward the sky.

Camel Pose

Start on your knees with your hands at the small of your back, fingertips facing down. Press your hips forward as you start to look up and back. As you lean back, you can reach your hands for your ankles, or keep them where they are.

Bow Pose

Start on your belly. Bend your knees and grab the outer edge of your ankles. Kick your shins back behind you as you lift your upper body. Press back to lift up.

Heart opening poses help strengthen postural muscles between your shoulder blades and help release some of the tension in the front of your body. Including these poses in your morning routine can help create an atmosphere of openness for your body and mind throughout the day.
