It is a common misconception that you have to be flexible and fit to practice yoga. Some people put off joining a yoga program because they feel they aren’t limber enough to be a member. Here at Your Yoga Fitness, we believe that yoga is for EVERYbody, and we take pride in helping our clients reach their fitness and health goals no matter where the starting point may be. Yoga is not designed for a specific gender, body type, or level of experience. Award-winning athletes and beginners alike are all welcome to practice and benefit from the yoga experience.
I’ve never practiced yoga before. What is a good starting point for me?
Unlike many other forms of exercise, yoga does not use a “one size fits all” approach. There are many forms of yoga that can be practiced at a variety of experience levels. Many studios offer classes that cater to specific styles, paces, and experience levels to help fit the needs of each of their clients.
If you are new to yoga, you don’t need to be anxious about asking for help. Beginning classes are specifically designed to teach you the principles and basics of yoga to help you build a solid foundation for your practice. Keep in mind that the other individuals in your classroom are either beginners too, or are working to strengthen their foundation, so no question is too simple or unwelcomed.
Beginning classes are often led at a slower pace, so you can focus on your form rather than keeping up with faster movements. It’s always a good idea to let your instructor know if you are practicing yoga for the first time or if you are new to the studio. This allows you to meet the instructor and can often help you feel more at ease when practicing as you feel you have someone looking out for your safety and success throughout the class.
What are the health benefits of yoga?
Yoga is more than just physical exercise- it is a mental exercise. If you’ve practiced yoga before in a group setting, you know that the mental and spiritual aspects of yoga are equally as important as the physical benefits of yoga.
While some choose to practice in the morning to get in a proper headspace to start the day, others like to unwind with a yoga session at the end of the workday. Yoga incorporates meditation and breathing which allows for a rejuvenation of the mind and spirit and greatly improves your mood. Yoga promotes body awareness, mental clarity, and the release of stress, which are all important to mental health.
Additionally, there are many physical benefits to yoga. In addition to increasing flexibility and muscle tone, yoga can help reduce chronic pain, improve respiration and energy, and can help protect you from injury.
For pregnant women, yoga can also greatly improve the birthing experience and postpartum healing process. If you are pregnant, always let your instructor know as some poses may need to be modified to improve blood flow and to keep you and your baby comfortable.
Talk to your instructor about which classes are best suited for you in this season of life to best keep you comfortable and on track to reach your physical, mental and spiritual goals.
